How the chances change over time
- The first 48 hours: the best window for dogs, as most quick reunions happen during this time.
- Days 2 to 7: the key window for cats. Hunger brings them out of hiding, and approximately one third of lost cats are found during the first week.
- Weeks 2 to 4: the chances decrease, but they remain real, especially if posters and the online listing are still active.
- After one month: reunions still happen, usually thanks to a microchip, when the animal reaches a vet or shelter, or through someone who saw the listing earlier.

- Neighbours and posters: most animals are seen by someone. The only question is whether that person knows who to contact.
- Check shelters every day: holding periods are short in many places, so do not leave days between visits.
The number that needlessly discourages people
Only a small proportion of cats in shelters are reunited with their owners, under 5% in some statistics. But this figure says something different from what it might seem to say: not that cats are rarely found, but that lost cats rarely reach shelters. They are usually close to home. That is exactly why physically searching your local area beats every other method when it comes to cats.
