Most lost dogs are found within a 1-3 kilometre radius of where they went missing, and in cities, often within 1 kilometre. Stories of dogs crossing the country are the exception, not the rule.

What affects the distance
- Size and energy: a large, young dog can cover 5+ km, while a small one gets tired quickly and stops.
- Fear: a panicked dog, because of fireworks or an accident, may run far in a straight line and only hide afterwards. A dog that is simply curious is more likely to wander around the area.
- Terrain: in cities, boulevards and fences keep a dog nearby, while in the countryside it may travel much farther.
- People: friendly dogs are often picked up by a well-meaning person within the first few hours. That is why posting online matters just as much as searching the streets.
How to search based on distance
- Hours 0-2: search on foot along its usual routes, within a radius of 500 m - 1 km.
- Day 1: search by car within a 2-3 km radius, keep the online post active, and call shelters and veterinary clinics.
- Days 2-3: put up posters and expand the search radius to 5 km; check shelters daily.
A panicked dog: a special case
A dog that has run away in fear, because of New Year's Eve, a storm or an accident, goes into survival mode: it does not respond to its name, avoids people, hides during the day and moves around at sunrise and sunset. Search for it early in the morning and in the evening, with food, without chasing it.
