Where a Missing Cat Hides and Why It Stays Silent

A missing cat is almost certainly within a few dozen or hundred meters, in a low, dark, covered place. And it stays silent: fear puts it into "freeze" mode, so it will not meow or come out even when it hears your voice. Researchers call this the silence factor.

The classic hiding places, in the order you should check them
- Under parked cars on your street.
- Garages, sheds, basements and dumpsters: places it may have entered and then been trapped inside. Ask your neighbors to open them.
- Under stairs, terraces, ramps and containers.
- Dense bushes and hedges, close to the ground.
- Attics and low roofs, if there is a way for it to climb up.
How to coax it out of hiding
At night, when it is quiet, walk slowly through the area with your flashlight held at ground level, looking for the reflection of its eyes. Speak calmly, shake the treat bag, then stay quiet and listen. Repeat every few steps.
If you know the approximate area, leave out strong-smelling food and check every few hours, ideally under supervision or with an inexpensive camera: you want to know WHO is coming to the food.
Why it does not come when you call
To a frightened cat, any noise, including its owner's voice calling loudly, means danger. Do not conclude that it "is not there" simply because it did not respond. Many cats are found just meters from home, after staying silent every time they were called for days.

Can it go days without food and water?
Yes, a few days, although not without risks. Hunger is usually what brings it out of hiding between day 2 and 7. Keep searching even after the first few days without any signs.
