Where to report a lost pet in Slovenia: all options compared

The short answer: call the municipal shelter and post a local alert on Reunika within the first hour, then use izgubljen.si, RTV Slovenija and a Facebook group, while also checking the registration in CRHZ. Below, each option is assessed honestly.

The options, one by one
- Reunika (reunika.com): a free post in one minute, a live map and an A4 poster with a QR code; optional paid alerts on Facebook and Instagram around the place where the animal went missing.
- CRHZ (UVHVVR): the official register, with a public microchip-number lookup. It is not a classifieds site. It works when someone scans the microchip, and only if the animal is registered, not merely microchipped.
- Zavetišče Ljubljana (zavetisce-ljubljana.si): the largest shelter, with free lost and found pet listings for Ljubljana and the surrounding municipalities, plus a 24/7 phone line.
- izgubljen.si: a free national listings board since 2011; small volume, but searchable.
- RTV Slovenija, “Izgubljene/najdene živali”: the public broadcaster’s free bulletin, with an archive.
- The “Pomoč za izgubljene in najdene živali Slovenija” page and the national Facebook group: the most active community channels; posts disappear within hours and there is no map. Add a link to your listing.
- The shelter contracted by the municipality and UVHVVR: the legally relevant route. Finders must report a found animal within 24 hours; a lost registered dog or cat must be deregistered in CRHZ within 8 days.
The combination that works
- Call the municipal shelter and post on Reunika with a photo and the exact location.
- Check the CRHZ registration and ask Veterinarska zbornica Slovenije to notify veterinary organisations and shelters about the lost chipped animal.
- Post on izgubljen.si and submit the notice to RTV Slovenija; share the link in the Facebook group.
- Put up posters from the second day onwards, in permitted locations.
Common questions
Why not just use Facebook?
Because a post disappears from the feed within a few hours and cannot be found by someone searching a week later. A listing with its own page stays on the map and gathers sightings; groups amplify it, with a link.
