Where to report a lost pet in Latvia: all options compared

The short answer: record the loss in the register within 72 h and publish an alert with a local reach on Reunika within the first hour, then post on Dzīvnieku policija and the Facebook group, and phone your municipality and shelter. Below, each option is assessed honestly.

The options, one by one
- Reunika (reunika.com): a free listing in one minute, a live map and an A4 poster with a QR code; optional paid alerts on Facebook and Instagram around the place where the pet disappeared.
- State register (registri.ldc.gov.lv, LAD): the official list of lost and found animals, free of charge; recording the loss is mandatory, but there is no alert sent to neighbours.
- Dzīvnieku policija (dzivniekupolicija.lv): the main national portal, free of charge, with a map, operating since 2012 and reporting thousands of reunions.
- ss.com, the atrasts-pazaudēts category: the country’s largest classifieds website; broad reach, but no local alert.
- ridzivnieki.lv: found animals in Riga, with the 24-hour helpline 80001201.
- The Facebook group “Atrastie, Pazudušie, Meklē jaunas mājas, Klaiņo. Dzīvnieki”: plenty of eyes on your post, but it can disappear within hours. Add a link to your listing.
- Municipality and shelter: the legally mandatory step; shelters keep stray dogs, cats and ferrets for 14 days while the owner is sought.

Common questions
Why not just Facebook?
Because a post disappears from the feed within a few hours and cannot be found by someone searching a week later. A listing with its own page stays on the map and collects sightings; groups amplify its reach when you share the link.
