Where to report a lost pet in Portugal: all options compared

The short answer: report it to SIAC and post a local alert on Reunika within the first hour, then use encontra-me.org and FindMyPet, the regional Facebook group and daily phone calls to the CRO. Below, each option is assessed honestly.

The options, one by one
- Reunika (reunika.com): a free listing in one minute, live map and A4 poster with QR code; optional paid alert on Facebook and Instagram around the place where the pet went missing.
- SIAC (siac.pt): the official register, with a public list of animals reported missing. Mandatory, but it has no local alert; it works when someone scans the microchip.
- Encontra-me.org: the largest national database of lost and found listings, free since 2005, with moderation, area alerts and an automatically generated PDF poster.
- FindMyPet (findmypet.omv.pt): the platform of the Ordem dos Médicos Veterinários together with PSP/SEPNA; case matching, with over 11,500 cases.
- Council CRO pages, for example Porto: official lists of animals taken into care; check them daily.
- Facebook groups ("Animais Perdidos e Encontrados - Portugal", regional groups): many pairs of eyes, but posts disappear within hours and there is no map. Add a link to your listing.
- SIAC, CRO and PSP/GNR: declare the loss to SIAC within 15 days; CROs keep animals for a minimum of 8 days, so contact the CRO and PSP/GNR immediately and follow up daily.
The combination that works
- Report it to SIAC and post on Reunika with a photo and the exact location.
- Call the CRO and PSP/GNR; follow up daily, especially during the first 8 days.
- Post on encontra-me.org and FindMyPet; share the link in Facebook groups.
- Put up posters from the second day onwards, in permitted locations.
Common questions
Why not just Facebook?
Because a post disappears from the feed within a few hours and cannot be found by someone searching a week later. A listing with its own page stays on the map and collects sightings; groups amplify it, with a link.
