Where to report a lost pet in Spain: options compared
Updated: September 16, 2026 · Reunika
The short answer: report the loss to the relevant register and Policía Local within 48 hours, post a local alert on Reunika within the first hour, then use Pet Alert and regional Facebook groups, while also calling the animal protection centre. Below, each option is assessed honestly.
No account. Starting the alert takes 30 seconds.
The options, one by one
- Reunika (reunika.com): free listing in one minute, live map and A4 poster with QR code; optional paid alert on Facebook and Instagram around the place where the pet went missing.
- Regional registers (RIAC, ANICOM, RAIA, RIVIA, REGIA...) through REIAC: compulsory, but not listing websites; they work when someone scans the microchip. Reporting the loss here is compulsory within 48 hours.
- Pet Alert España (petalertglobal.com/es): free basic listing, provincial Facebook pages and paid alerts costing 30-100 EUR.
- Gato Perdido (gato-perdido.com): free, for cats only, part of an international network; active.
- LostPets (lostpets.es): free, with a map and e-mail alerts, but low traffic and listings that expire after 30 days.
- Milanuncios, the mascotas perdidas category: large audience and provincial pages, but listings disappear quickly and there is no local alert.
- Facebook groups ("Perros y Gatos Perdidos y Encontrados en España" and regional groups): many eyes on the post, but it disappears within hours and there is no map. Add a link to your listing.
- Policía Local and the animal protection centre: the legally required step, with short holding periods.
The combination that works
- Report the loss to the register and Policía Local (48 h), and post on Reunika with a photo and the exact location.
- Call the local council's animal protection centre and follow up daily.
- Post on Pet Alert and gato-perdido.com (for cats); share the link in regional Facebook groups and on Milanuncios.
- Put up posters from the second day onwards, in permitted locations.
Common questions
Why not just use Facebook?
Because a post disappears from the feed within a few hours and cannot be found by someone searching a week later. A listing with its own page stays on the map and collects sightings; groups amplify it, with a link.
